Lake Nakuru National Park
About Lake Nakuru National Park
Kenya is home to Lake Nakuru National Park, one of the country’s most scenic and wildlife-rich parks, famous for its flamingo-filled lake and strong rhino conservation efforts. Located in the Great Rift Valley about 160 km (100 miles) northwest of Nairobi, the park surrounds the shallow alkaline Lake Nakuru, which attracts thousands of water birds and creates a spectacular natural setting.
Covering approximately 188 square kilometers, the park sits at an altitude of around 1,754 meters and features a diverse landscape of acacia woodlands, rocky escarpments, grasslands, and lake shores. Lake Nakuru is especially renowned for its large populations of both black and white rhinos, making it one of the best places in Kenya to see these endangered species. In addition to rhinos, visitors can encounter lions, leopards, buffaloes, giraffes (including the rare Rothschild’s giraffe), zebras, and a variety of antelope species.
The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 400 species recorded, including flamingos, pelicans, cormorants, and fish eagles. Its compact size and well-maintained roads make it ideal for short safaris and easy game viewing.
